Influence of Reminders on Oral Hygiene Status in Patients Undergoing Fixed Orthodontic Treatment: A Double-blinded, Clinical Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract

Aim: To investigate whether weekly text message reminders have an effect on improvement in oral hygiene status of the orthodontic patients undergoing fixed appliance. Materials and methods: In this randomized controlled clinical trial, 30 orthodontic patients were randomly allocated to either text message group or control group. Patients in the text message group received text messages once weekly for 3 months. Plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI) were measured on Ramfjord index teeth at baseline (T0), 1 month (T1), 2 months (T2), and 3 months after baseline (T3). Results: PI and GI scores were significantly lower in the text message group as compared with the control group (p <0.05). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that text message reminders were effective in improving oral hygiene compliance in orthodontic patients. Clinical significance: Text messages can be sent to the orthodontic patients as a reminder therapy, which will improve the oral hygiene status of the patients.
